Hornung Elementary Key Projects

Secure Vestibule & Lockout System

A secure vestibule provides an important layer of protection by ensuring all visitors enter through a controlled, monitored entrance before gaining access to the school. Unlike the current layout, a properly designed secure vestibule allows staff to screen and assist visitors without direct access to students or learning spaces. A secure lockout system further enhances safety by allowing staff to quickly secure the entrance and control access during emergencies. Together, these improvements create a safer environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Enclosing Covered Porches

Enclosing the covered porches will provide students with a secure, protected route directly into their classrooms without requiring them to pass through neighboring classrooms or travel outside. This improvement minimizes disruptions to instruction, enhances student supervision, and strengthens campus security by keeping students within a controlled, enclosed environment during classroom transitions.
New Gymnasium

Hornung's shared cafeteria and gym create ongoing challenges for students and staff. The combined space limits the effectiveness of physical education. Building a dedicated gymnasium would provide students with a safe, reliable space for physical activity while allowing the existing gym to be converted into much-needed classroom space. Because gymnasium construction is significantly less expensive than building new classroom space, this approach addresses two facility needs in a more cost-effective way.
Additional Classroom Space

Today's students have a wide range of learning needs, and our schools need spaces that support their academic success. By remodeling existing areas and making the most of the space we have, we can expand classroom space and dedicated areas for small-group instruction, individualized academic support, and enrichment. These improvements will help reduce class sizes and give support staff appropriate spaces to work with students. Sensory rooms will also help students regulate emotions and refocus so the can return to learning. Together, these changes will better use our school buildings to give every student the space and support they need to succeed.
Mechanical/Electrical & Plumbing

Many of the school's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems—including boilers, chillers, and other critical equipment—are aging and nearing the end of their useful life. Replacing these essential systems will improve reliability, increase energy efficiency, reduce costly emergency repairs, and help ensure students and staff have a safe, comfortable, and well-functioning learning environment for years to come.
